Home Of The Rare Breed.
I just recently drove to Huntsville, AL to spring a male 11 month old Boerboel out of the shelter there and foster him for awhile (unless I become a foster failure!). Apparently he was an owner surrender because they did not want to keep taking him to the vet for his skin problems, of which they did not get to the bottom of. He is constantly itching everywhere- his belly and under his chin are covered in red bumps and he is missing most of his hair on his hindquarters, belly, chest and front legs. I have since taken him to my female Boerboel's vet, where they have done a skin scrape (no mange or yeast growing), put him on antibiotics and Hydroxyzine (antibiotics for the skin infection he now has from scratching so much), and given him a shot of ivermectin. I also have an allergy shampoo they gave me that's supposed to help soothe his skin that we've done twice so far. My vet seems to think the issue is most likely allergies. I have also started him on a grain-free food (he is eating great!). My question is has anyone had a similar experience with their Boerboel's skin, and does anyone have any other recommendations? It just breaks my heart to see him scratch himself until he bleeds and be in such obvious discomfort. I realize it's probably going to take time for him to heal but would love any helpful advice from anyone that's had a similar issue with their dog!
