Hi Sandi,

First off, congratulations on you new Boerboel! In order to answer your question, we probably need some background information. Is this a puppy, or an adult? Is it your first Boerboel? Are you importing the pup, or are you picking it up? Do you have any children, or other pets? How old? What is your experience with large, dominant breeds?

With additional information, we can probably provide a better answer. In the meantime, a warm soft bed, lots of good food and a lot of loving are the best recipe for a new pup. You probably already knew that though!

Good luck, and please post lots of pictures!

Sharon
Congrats on your boerbole, how exciting! Depends on how old he is when you get him. I always recommend having a crate to keep your dog in no matter the age. Have a leash and collar ready to start using. Introducing Koda to each room at home on leash. The point is to do it in a controlled way so Koda isn't running crazy. Avoid those rooms that are off limits. It would be good to keep Koda on a leash for awhile around the house to keep control and teach what is allowed. Have some toys and chew stuff ready for Koda. Pick out some quality dog food rather its kibble or raw feeding. Heres a great link to read up on dog food .http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/
Congrats on your new family member, BB can be a little ruffer then most dogs hope your ready, we will be here to help if you need it. Good luck, and Don't forget the training!! Peace Lee
thank you, I have 3 small dogs and have crate trained all
Thank you. I have crate trained all of my dogs, and Koda has a new extra large one with a divider waiting for her. It has been a long time since I had a larger breed so I am hoping that training is the same....for the most part.

I am picking her up in Georgia Sat...she is a puppy...8 Weeks old.....I have 2 chihuahuas and a dachshund. no small children in household, just me and my daughter....I have a 7 yr old grand daughter that lives locally. We have a smaller fenced yard....putting a lock on gate and Koda will only be out when we are with her...for her safety as well as others. We have a crate for here...this is how I train all of my dogs, and they follow a schedule, which they pick up on by themselves. koda will begin obedience classes in January after she has had all of her shots.
Hi Sandi, congrats on your new addition! I would definitely start puppy classes sooner than January. i know petsmart will start after 2 sets of shots. I feel you miss a big amount of important socialization time if you wait so long. Kate

wow grats on your little girl. i am going to agree with kate about the training. there is alot you can do at home, sit, down, heel, no, out, and wait for instance.socialization is very very important start that as soon as you can to.there are places you can go that are not germ factories like dog parks or petsmart after you get your first set of shots. these guys grow very fast and a 18 to 25 lb puppy is easier to handle then a 40 to 60 lb one. i would also start thinking about trainers, esp if you never had a dominate type molloser before they can be a bit of a shock to the system.
you are going to find boels play rough which can be a challenge for you, if you have small dogs they can be snippy with bigger dogs for good reason. they dont like to be steppped and jumped on, they are also alot more fragile i have a min pin and i have to watch them very closely. i would suggest you watch them very carefully at doors and gate cause it is very easy to have a little dog get trampled and hurt. please dont let your puppy trample charge head butt or body slam you little ones. its easy for a boel to send a litttle dog bouncing and tumbling several feet before anyone knows what happened.
please feel welcome and free to pick our brains if you have any questions thats what we are hear for

Kind Regards
Ashley

Yes, she is scheduled for training in January after her shots are completed. My guys do not like her at this point but are trying to play with her some. She is very unstable but a little bit too much biting, as with all puppies, that is the reason my little guys are so apprehensive. Do you use a water bottle to train her what "no, stay, off, down, and leave it means? That is what we do in the class I go to for my dogs. Also, what do you do when the dogs get into a tif and start fighting? It is hard because we know Koda is trying to play and doesn't understand.

when they are this young i would say they need alot of supervision get a choke chain and a short lead when she gets to wild and yes she will go over to her and you want her to leave the area say ***** whatever her name is OUT and gentally lead her away if she resists tell her in just a little firmer tone no out and give a small leaash pop and i mean very small correction and get her out of there she will learn she has to leave the situation and its just as simple as that dont forget to really really praise her when she listens to you have a huge party over it you dont like something she does tell her out and follow thru.
with young puppies i like leerberg marker training later you can wean them off of it after she learns that command but i think they learn how to learn better with a bit of food. here is a example you have to charge the marker first so get some food something absolutely yummy and when you got her attention say YES back up just a little bit so she sees the food in your hand so she is almost chasing it, nothing exaggerated just a few steps and then praise. do this alot so when you say yes she knows she did something very good about 30 times infact do not rush this. its very important after a bit you are ready to start the real work. put your pup on a leash make sure she is paying attention to you lol thats not easy sometimes they dont have much attention span at this point. take the piece of food in your hand pass it slowly above her head a few inches and she will look up and sit down. then say YES treat and praise have a party and do not name it a sit till you are happy with the behaviour, so do it about 30 times. first training sessions should be no longer then 3 mins in the beginning and you can do it more then once a day. just remeber every time you say yes it is like a snap shot in there brain that you really like what they just did. treats have to be given no more then 1.5 seconds from your marker word. this sounds very simple but its not you have to get the time right you might want to practice on another dog first.

i do not use water bottles to discipline i keep it simple strait forward and no nonsense which is exactly what a boel needs remember firm but fair. good luck please feel free to ask alot of questions we have all been there.

Kind Regards
Ashley
Hows everything going with your new boerboel pup Sandi?
Congrats! We always made sure we had a toy in our hands so our pup learned to bite the toy...not the hand. If she nipped our hand by accident or went to bite our pants we would "YELP" like a puppy would if play got too rough. She learned so quickly to inhibit bite this way.

Have a blast and take lots of pictures! They grow fast!!!!

"Hello Kim welcome and thanks for posting.  Sorry to hear you having trouble with your puppy.  First off have you taken her to the vet?  Do they know of the situation?  Have they taken a urine sample?  If your girl has a UTI…"

obsessive Water drinking

Our 12 week old Boerboel wants to drink water - she has had a urinary infection that we have been treating.. but this is crazy... she searches for mud puddles, rain, condensation... drinks until she is miserable and burping then lays around and pees... potty training is near impossible as she is more interested in water than life... ANY IDEAS? See More
