Hello everyone :) I'm Bel, and I'm here mostly because of curiosity about Boerboels. August 2010, my 17 year old lab/cocker/pit died; thought I was through with dogs. then one night in March 2011 I was searching for a lost dog's owner and stumbled across a page posted by a volunteer (of dogs locally who are taken to a property of a military facility and never seen). In short, I ended up with a dog she thought was a Shepherd cross, aged at 6 months..but before I got it , he became a bloodhound cross aged 1 year, lol.
Looking around he looks similar to Boerboels ( maybe a cross? If not a sharpei/retriever), just in kind of bad shape with a few car chasing and can chewing habits we had to nip. There are two breeders near where he was (and people crossing them as pig dogs in Texas, too), yet no one I could find locally was looking for a lost one, & besides, this one has been on the road awhile.
We all noticed he was unusual in that he accepts family, one small poodle, neighbor kids, but not too keen on others till he is calmed down. He sits around like an old 12 year old dog....that is till energy builds up and has to be leeched. He is very house trained and walks stairs carefully. Can sit on command but it's taking a refresher to get there and over-rule leash drift or distraction. He eats several times a day in small amounts. And he knows words: dig. water, sit, stay (sort of), slow down, good, bad, fetch, no, and a few others I could pin point. We found one whistle he knows by listening to a response to TV. His prey drive over cats and deer was high but we have worked some of this out already.
There's other things--after two weeks, and I am to just three weeks ownership now, he began whining if I left and has gotten semi-protective. He doesn't want to please but will do as asked with periodic reminders (set downs)..I don't know what kind of dog this is at about 60 lbs. and between 6 months to 1 year..but I thought I might learn something here. So thanks, in advance, for any help or hints. I am about 57 yrs. and not wonderful health..so it may be a weird match but the animal would not even have been seen..so I'll give it the ol try.

Hi every one i am Willy De Sousa
form Bloemfontein South Africa.
i have one male boerboel called Zorro , i will be taking him on the 28th May for grading. i am hoping he wins the members hearts, and scores good points. i will be breeding with him. later on i want to have my own kennels to breed top top boerboels.
hi all, well i do have a few questions and things i would like to get advice on.
My boerboel Rory is now 5, almost 6 months old, he is a strong dog and always happy.
I dont know if its cause he is still young and full of energy but he loves barking, growling and biting, i know he is playing cause his tail is always wagging. he also like jumping up on me when we play. i take Rory a walk everyday and play with him for atleast an hour throwing tennis balls around and so on. i think his barking, biting and jumping is just cause he is really excited and young but im worried if people with kids come around he is going to jump, bite and bark at them. also when we go a walk he always wants to run off but after 30min he walks next to me and i feel like i dont even need the leash. is this also just excitement?
i have signed us up for dog training classes which we will be doing every saturday now for an hour, its just behavioural classes and not attach classes.
i think this should help him a bit.
does anyone else have these problems and what advice would you give me, if you guys think im doing anything wrong please let me know, all advise is welcome.
Welcome! We found that if our boerboel Mabel bit, even playfully, we would YELP....loudly. Then ignore her briefly. Then go back to play. She has perfect bite inhibition now. We also stopped the jumping up because as they grow it is no longer cute. A firm "no" and turn your back worked for us. When she stayed on all fours she got lots of love.
Hope that helps. Sounds like you got a real wonderful and confident guy. Have a blast with him

My name is Dennis and I am the proud owner of a 2 year old Male Piebald Boerboel named Leonidas. Because of him we have absolutely fallen in love with the breed and have a new addition to the family coming on June 12th. We are getting a female Boerboel playmate for him. Leonidas recently passed his AKC Canine Good Citizen Test(I was SOOOO proud of him). I guess thats all for now :)
