Lisa,
It seems scary and overwhelming to decide on a good breeder. Especially with the fact that I am not able to visit them personally and have to have the puppy shipped to me. Have you personally used any of the breeders you mentioned in Virginia? Can you or anyone else recommend any other breeders?
Thank you so much,
-Sue
I have owned Boerboel's for the last ten years. Just lost both at once(one to old age, one to Lymphoma)(By the way, does anyone out there know if this is a breed issue, she was only 6)...
We are heartbroken(I have a 14 and 16 year old)... We LOVED those dogs. Looking for a puppy. Found one that is available through Copperhead Boerboels. Does anyone have any insight/experience with the breeder. Temperament is key for us... also don't want a total couch potato...
Any info would be great... Thanks Nancy
Please consider rescuing a Boerboel too, most of these guys are still pretty young, Rescue
I had some dealings with that breeder, I would never get a dog from him ever!!! I put a deposit down on and signed a contract on a breeding between two specific dogs well in advance and then 6 month later he said he isnt going to breed those two dogs but I could have my choice of the ones he was going to breed. I finally got my deposit after telling him it was breach of contract and I could sue. I feel I have a much better dog from a superior breeder, so very happy he breached his contract.

Someone else had a problem with that breeder as well. I can't remember who it was. Maybe they will see this and chime in ;)

I agree. It is scary because you are placing all of your trust in a complete stranger. I have become acquainted through facebook and these forums with some wonderful people who have dogs from the two VA breeders I mentioned. They do work and competitions with their dogs. Darkwater has dogs that do therapy work amongst other things. I was set to get a pup from them after I lost my first BB to AIHA. I wanted one right away as we were completely heartbroken over her loss. I had to wait a few weeks for the Darkwater pup because she was still too young. I ended up getting a 4 1/2 month old pup from David Harris because I could get him right away. I highly recommend Harris Boerboels and I have fb friends, one is a trainer, that own and recommend the other two breeders. I have chatted with them on fb as well. Although anything can happen I think you would be quite happy with a puppy from any of these breeders. They health test their dogs and they have great temperaments from what I am told. My boy is a gem. I haven't heard of the breeder that you mentioned but he could be good too, I just don't know personally. Let me know if you have any questions. I'd be happy to help if I can!

Hi Sue,
If I was going to get a BB pup and I lived in FLA, I would call Darkwater Boerboels in VA and Centurion Boerboels in Va. I live in MA and I got my male from Kansas from David Harris. These 3 breeders, and there are others as well, have good reputations and produce good quality dogs with good temperaments. Temperament and health should be the #1 concern. The reason I told you to do your homework is because there are many people that are breeding BB's with poor nerves, poor temperaments and bad health. My first one was a train wreck and I THOUGHT that I did my homework. So talk to people who have experience and ask lots of questions. You should also visit the breeder in person and put your hands on their dogs. Just remember, BB's are not for everyone. they are a dominant breed and need lots of training and exercise. Good luck!

Hi Sue,
Where in Florida are you located? I think it would be best to actually meet a few BBs first. Some of these guys (such as my own) can be quite the handful!

Does anyone know any reputable breeders in Florida?
Thanks Jen! You're right, I don't know why I said VA. lol....I should have told her to talk to you since you live in FLA. That's a good idea about her meeting a couple first. Thanks for chiming in! ;)

Hi Sue I have had BB for 10 years or so now and have seen MANY changes in the breed and "breeders". There are less than a handful of breeders in north america I would recommend based on health, temperament, ethics. Very sad really. I wholeheartedly agree on darkwater and centurion. very nice ladies who truly love their dogs and the breed. Take your time, ask lots of questions and spend time talking to the breeders before choosing. remember you will have a relationship with them for a long time hopefully. Don't let smoke, mirrors and appraisal scores sway you. Always check health scores. Good luck! A good boerboel is the best dog you will ever have but a bad one is a Whole Lot of bad dog!
