What are the bumps Jeff? Just curious and welcome!

Thanks for the welcome Lisa. Before owning my boerboels I had always owned labs/golden retrievers. All though I thought I was fully prepared for a dominant breed I was far from it. Even though I had read extensively about raising dominant breed dogs, there was no substitute for actually raising them.

My dogs are absolutely great, the bumps in the road I have talked about are related to my females dog aggression. She gets along great with my male but cannot be with any other dog.  That's part of the reason I joined here, to get a chance to talk with other boerboel owners about firsthand experience and maybe some shared issues.

cheers

That's exactly the reason that I asked. My first BB was a female. That is her in my profile picture. She was a sweetie until she reached sexual maturity. Then she started attacking my guests and random dogs on walks. She had unwarranted aggression and passed away at 2 from an unrelated disease. My new boy is a joy, friendly to all dogs and people and confident but not cocky. When I chose a breeder this time I knew what to look for and the questions to ask. I hope you get the answers you are looking for!
Hello my name is Darryl and just got my first BB. He is joy to me and family . He is now a member of our house hold and family . We have t9 take him back to the vet 18 Feb and hopely the heart murmur that the vet said that he heard has gone away .Thx
My wife Danielle and I both love dogs. We are very interested in Boerboels and are preparing ourselves to soon provide a good home for our new family member.
We first became aware of the breed about 4 months ago when a friend of ours told us about the new dog he had gotten. After seeing him we both knew we fell in love with "Cutie" and wanted one of our own.
We live in Harford County Maryland and have a large yard for being in the city (1/2 acre yard).
We both are have had large dogs before and understand each breed is different.
For now we want to educate ourselves as much as possible before we bring in a new family member.
Once we are ready we will consider buying a pup or adopting.
If there are any members on this that are in northern Maryland and wouldn't mind sharing information and or meeting so we could see other Boerboels we would greatly appreciate it!

Greetings,

My name Is Ismail, and I'm from North philadelphia. Presently I reside right outside of philly.

I've been looking into the boerboel since 06'. I'm here to learn more and network.

I do like most mastiff variations, as well as pitbull/staffordshire, and bull terriers.

Currently have a cane corso imported from italy. Will be looking for a boerboel pup in the near future.

boerboel .i am waiting for her!
Hello my name is Carlos, I am from Southern California area. I am looking for a Boerboel club in my area. I have a 3 year old male named Shadow. I was on the internet looking for any Boerboel club and this site came up. Thank you for this site.

Hello Everyone..my name is Ramesh Narayanan. I am from Bangalore, India. I recently( 7 months ago) got my Boerboel puppy. I had a GSD for 15 years and wanted to get a dog with similar characteristics..and I guessed a Boerboel was a good option. Everyday seems to be a learning day with a Boerboelpuppy..I find her very sweet but very stubborn. She's smart but does stuff only if she feels it has a purpose. She's laid back in her demeanour but extremely quick if she wants to be..she is a silent dog..doesn't bark much..but when she wants to its avert loud bark. She's now 10 months old. She is aloof to strangers but is friendly to them if I tell her they are friends. Compared to my GSD she's a very suspicious dog..is that the way Boerboels are? I have read multiple posts in this forum of "fearful"Boerboels..is that another way of describing a suspicious dog which doesn't trust or take anything on face value? I feed my pup raw and I find that my pup is quite healthy and alert with this diet rather than kibble. Another thing I find different from a GSD is the Boerboel is not a fussy eater. My pup eats anything and everything.so that's a long winded introduction to myself. I have had some very quick and extremely informative responses to my queries in this forum. Very helpful for folks like me to whom a Boerboel is an unknown quantity. Thanks all once again.

Hi Ramesh, and a belated welcome! You have describe some of the traits of the Boerboel very aptly. Gijsbert made some very fitting associations just a few pages back.  The GSD is likened to a willing servant, responding to commands without question. The Boerboel is more of a loyal companion and will respect a request because she respects you. They are independent thinkers. It is important to add relevance to your commands and training at home, i.e. give everything you want from her a purpose she can relate to. You want to go out?... You'll have to lie down before that can happen. vs. "DOWN!". Come here, I want to say Hi, as opposed to "Come here!"  Boerboels are often mistaken for stubborn and difficult to train because this is misunderstood.

Boerboels are supposed to be cautious and aloof when it comes to strangers, but don't confuse it with fear. They should not hide, panic, or attack when introduced to strangers, nor should they be overly friendly.

I find nothing more annoying than a dog that goes yapping up and down the fence day and night. A well adapted Boerboel will not bark at every movement or sound, but will discriminate between everyday sounds and activity, and the unusual.

Very good description Jens!

"Hello Kim welcome and thanks for posting.  Sorry to hear you having trouble with your puppy.  First off have you taken her to the vet?  Do they know of the situation?  Have they taken a urine sample?  If your girl has a UTI…"

obsessive Water drinking

Our 12 week old Boerboel wants to drink water - she has had a urinary infection that we have been treating.. but this is crazy... she searches for mud puddles, rain, condensation... drinks until she is miserable and burping then lays around and pees... potty training is near impossible as she is more interested in water than life... ANY IDEAS? See More
