Home Of The Rare Breed.
Hello everyone,
I am about four weeks out from receiving my very first boerboel pup, and I'm gearing up trying to ensure I have everything I need. The problem is the excitement is probably making me buy more things than I probably do need. Anyway, after about six months of research I have decided to feed raw. During my research I ran across one man who adds nzymes bac-pak plus to his dogs food.
I wanted to get the experts advise on this, do you use it and what is your experience with it. Also do you think 10 weeks would be to young to start on it?
Thanks,
Gene

Hi Gene,
That's great that you are going to take the plunge and feed raw right from the start. I don't see a problem with that product and dogs can really benefit from probiotics, especially when switching to raw. The only thing I would do is call the company to make sure it's ok to use in puppies. If so, I would think once your pup is acclimated to raw and immune system is mature, you should not need this unless you have to give antibiotics. My male with who has a poor immune system and allergy issues gets probiotics regularly. My healthy female only gets them if she needs antibiotics. While I've never used Nzymes, it does seem like a good product.
There's plenty of people here who feed raw too if you need any advice. Good luck with your new pup!
Lisa, the antibiotics kill all the beneficial intestinal bacteria that aid in digestion and support the immune system. I hate giving antibiotic too, but sometimes they are just a necessary evil. Pepcid and other acid reducers also interfere with the good bacteria. I would definitely give them. Some argue the value of starting the probiotics while they are still on the antibiotics, as the antibiotics may kill the probiotics, but I given them anyway and don't wait for the course of antibiotic to finish. Just make sure you give a probiotic that is specific to what dogs have for bacteria in their gut. I personally like Vetri-Mega Probiotic and use that one for Bear. Hope Axel's feeling better!
Lisa, I would just finish the antibiotic since you can cause more harm than good stopping and restarting, but it should be safe to ditch the Pepcid. Glad Axel is better!
