Hello everyone,

I am about four weeks out from receiving my very first boerboel pup, and I'm gearing up trying to ensure I have everything I need.  The problem is the excitement is probably making me buy more things than I probably do need.  Anyway, after about six months of research I have decided to feed raw.  During my research I ran across one man who adds nzymes bac-pak plus to his dogs food.

I wanted to get the experts advise on this, do you use it and what is your experience with it.  Also do you think 10 weeks would be to  young to start on it?

Thanks,

Gene

Hi Gene,

That's great that you are going to take the plunge and feed raw right from the start. I don't see a problem with that product and dogs can really benefit from probiotics, especially when switching to raw. The only thing I would do is call the company to make sure it's ok to use in puppies. If so, I would think once your pup is acclimated to raw and immune system is mature, you should not need this unless you have to give antibiotics. My male with who has a poor immune system and allergy issues gets probiotics regularly. My healthy female only gets them if she needs antibiotics. While I've never used Nzymes, it does seem like a good product.

There's plenty of people here who feed raw too if you need any advice. Good luck with your new pup!

Kim, why probiotics when they are on an antibiotic? Axel was sick last week and is on an antibiotic. Should I give him them? I hate giving antibiotics but I got so nervous when he got sick because I saw Bella all over again so I rushed him to the vet. Anyway she gave him Pepcid and an antibiotic as well. And as far as raw goes Gene, it's the best thing for your pup. I supplement with fish oil and ester c and joint supplement. Good luck!

Lisa, the antibiotics kill all the beneficial intestinal bacteria that aid in digestion and support the immune system. I hate giving antibiotic too, but sometimes they are just a necessary evil. Pepcid and other acid reducers also interfere with the good bacteria. I would definitely give them. Some argue the value of starting the probiotics while they are still on the antibiotics, as the antibiotics may kill the probiotics, but I given them anyway and don't wait for the course of antibiotic to finish. Just make sure you give a probiotic that is specific to what dogs have for bacteria in their gut. I personally like Vetri-Mega Probiotic and use that one for Bear. Hope Axel's feeling better!

Thanks Kim. He is feeling better tg! We went for a walk today. He is pretty much back to normal except that he lost a few pounds and looks skinny. I feel like stopping the meds because he probably had what my chihuahua and my cat had and they got better on their own but I am so afraid he'll have a relapse.

Gene, I did use the Nzymes for my old dog and Bella, my BB that passed away last year. My friend swears by it. She put her 4 dogs on it and so I tried it. It seemed to help them but I also gave them salmon oil and joint supplements too. When I ran out the last time I just stopped using it. I have since added ester c to their diets. When I started feeding raw the people in one of the raw feeding FB groups said that soy was not species appropriate and could cause an allergy. I don't really know either way. My old dog is still alive and she's 15 1/2 years old. My friend pays to get advice on the phone from the Great Dane lady and it's holistic methods that have worked for her little Yorkshire terrier who has been in and out of the hospital several times. Hope this helps with your decision. Good luck with the new pup!

Lisa, I would just finish the antibiotic since you can cause more harm than good stopping and restarting, but it should be safe to ditch the Pepcid. Glad Axel is better!

Yeah, I'm gonna. I already stopped the Pepcid and today I put him back on his other supplements I give him. His stool was nice and firm today, no diarrhea. He's back to being a pain in ass again lol.....but I'm glad!

Thank you everyone for the great advice.

"Hello Kim welcome and thanks for posting.  Sorry to hear you having trouble with your puppy.  First off have you taken her to the vet?  Do they know of the situation?  Have they taken a urine sample?  If your girl has a UTI…"

obsessive Water drinking

Our 12 week old Boerboel wants to drink water - she has had a urinary infection that we have been treating.. but this is crazy... she searches for mud puddles, rain, condensation... drinks until she is miserable and burping then lays around and pees... potty training is near impossible as she is more interested in water than life... ANY IDEAS? See More
