I am having some recent behavioral/socialization issues with my BB pup. He is going to hit 11 months shortly, and recently he has been acting unacceptable towards both unknown people and dogs. He growls at people upon meeting them, and they are understandably uncomfortable with it. Usually, after he's been introduced he will be fine with them. Initially, though, he scares me with how he is acting. Also he wants nothing to do with strange dogs, and growls at them as well.
This is a recent thing. I took him to lessons as a puppy, and have been socializing him as I have read to do since I've gotten him. He has always been around new people and dogs.
Anyone else experiencing something like this? He is not fixed yet, and I am wondering if maybe it will change his behavior?
This is a true behavior dichotomy, as I have never had a sweeter dog in my life. He is a velcro dog to both me and my friends/family that he knows. I am wondering if maybe it's a protection thing, as he is very protective of me and my house.

Yes Sherry, Mount Olympus Boerboels in Texas. I got my new boy Axel from David Harris in Kansas. He is 14 months old and is currently training for his CGC test. He has a sound temperment and endless energy. There are a few others that I would recommend in the U.S.A. as well. You can't be too careful and ask a lot of questions! Good luck!

I have to ask when he acts aggressive what are you reactions? When he acts in this behavior try to reassure him that you are one OK and two that he is OK. The dog was created for protection, you as the owner have to channel his protectiveness. Also how much exercise does the puppy gets?
Thanks for the advice!

Thanks! Which breeders in the USA would you recommend?

I would choose a breeder who works their dogs. I considered Darkwater, Centurion and Harris. I don't think you would be disappointed in any of those. If you want a personal protection working Boerboel, Dichotomy Boerboels breeds specifically for that. There are other reputable breeders as well but these are the breeders that I talked with and the reason I chose David Harris was because he had a 4 month old immediately available and the price was right. Good luck!
I have the brother to Lisa's dog. He is top notch. My previous Boerboel was dog and human aggressive. This dog is probably one of the most dog social dogs I have ever seen. I was actually surprised. I figured I would have a few issues and I would just deal with it. If you read on here, you will find that Boerboel aggression issues are more common than rare. (various reasons)
I noticed there was a post regarding someone wanting to stay Pure Positive. If this is your mindset you have already hampered your ability to come up with a solution. One must always do what is best for the dog and not adhere to artificial rule books.
