Home Of The Rare Breed.
Hi all, I have been researching the Boerboel breed for quite some time. As I get closer to purchasing my first Boerboels. I wanted to know dos and don’ts with this breed. I have own Rottweiler’s and Chows in the past. I have read many articles on line, but I wanted to hear from true Boerboel owners and breeders. What advice would you all have to offer me or anyone getting started with owning and breeding Boerboels?
Thanks

Hello Will welcome to the site! Just got in from a long day, so for the moment I'm gonna leave you with some stuff to look over. First we have a group here called New Boeboel Owners, that would be a great place to start. There was also a do, and don'ts post put up by Ashley who is one of our members. Last thing for now theres a section in our forums dedicated for new owners. There you will find lots of questions, and answers from other members. Sorry pretty tired here right now, but I hope this helps you get started. If you have any specific questions please ask, we have a lot of helpful people here that may be able to answer them for you. I hope you enjoy the site!
Hi Will. It might help us to assist you in do's and don'ts if you could tell us what has drawn you to the breed to begin with? And what do you expect out of your puppy/adult Boerboel?
Sure I have been around dogs my entire life. I have owned Chows, Shepherds, and Rottweiler’s. I was drawn to the Boerboels dog years ago with I encountered one at the park. I was in my trunk getting ready to take my Rottwiler for rump in the park when this large dog approaches. Of course my Rottwiler was alert but not aggressive as the two large dog played with each other. I look for the owner and could not find them. So this large dog let me look at his tags and I was able to find the owner. Of course the owner was thrill to have her dog back. That’s when I begin to ask more question and I found out how good this breed could be with kids and also be very protective of their family if socialize correctly. I wanted a good temperament dog that would protect the family if the need it. I also like the build of this dog with such size but still maintain great atheism. Fast forward I lost both of my Rottwilers about 2 years ago and have finally decided to get back in the dog world. So my eyes are set on the Boerboel and I am in the process of doing my research.

Good Luck and Welcome Will!
I don't have any do's and dont's but I always start by telling people that the Boerboel is not a 'casual' breed. They require a lot of dedication and time. We owned Mastiff mixs, Rotties, Labs, and cattle dog mix but non of them fully prepped us for the BB. Our experience has been that they are intelligent and quick to learn but also quick to try to be the Alpha. Ours always want to be by our side and where our Rottie will go do his own thing, our BB's want to be in the thick of everything! I haven't imported any of mine from out the country, so I don't have any advice there. But if you're looking in the US, go with a breeder who asks just as many questions about you as you do their dogs. Out of the 6 breeders we've dealt with, the ones who were really interested in us were the ones that were there for us and available when we needed them or just had a question.
