Recovery process for spay and gastropexy

Wondering if anyone has suggestions for helping our BB recover safely from a spay combined with gastropexy?  She is a year old and will have surgery on 1/14/11.  Nervous mommy will take any tips or recommendations.

Hi Leah!  I have actually heard of dogs that have bloated in their beds after eating with no exercise involved at all.  I think it is a not completely understood event.  No one seems to be able to pinpoint exactly the cause other than it is common in large deep chested breeds.  I say go for the gastropexy and better to get it done while already under anesthesia.

Recovery time will definitely be a bit longet than your girl will think she needs! :)  good luck

Ive got three bb, I will never do a operation if its not necessity, bloating is mostly cause after eating - being to active!Thats why i walk my team early - wait a hour feed them in the morning and at night, after they have eaten they usely go and sleep abite.   But do some google on it.

Hi Chantell,

Thanks for your comment.  In our research of raising large breed dogs and in talking with others, gastropexy came up as a good preventative measure (to be done during spay) to prevent the twist part of bloat.  Mabel has not had any signs of bloat so far.  I contacted her breeeder to see if it is in the family history and am waiting to hear back. Our vet thought it would be a great idea to have done while she is spayed and is confident in the procedure.  I have had many dogs spayed before as fosters but none of them were over a 100 lbs.  I'm worried about keeping her still and off furniture post-surgery.  I know the vet will give us all the instructions for recovery but I'm wondering if anyone has good tips as well.  Thanks so much!

Why is she going for a gastropexy, has she had her tummy flip? Has the vet told you its necessary?  Just one thing you must know about bb - they do pass gass alot - its a bb thing, they could poop you out of the house literally. What is the reason for the gastropexy?

I presume she has had here first heat sickle if so - its good that you are getting her spayed!

After spaying they could go on as normal, but the gastropexy I would ask the vet to give you reasons for doing it and if you decide on it - ask the vet if she should eat as normal? why I am asking that is because the stomach is going to be attached to her side on the inside.

"Hello Kim welcome and thanks for posting.  Sorry to hear you having trouble with your puppy.  First off have you taken her to the vet?  Do they know of the situation?  Have they taken a urine sample?  If your girl has a UTI…"

obsessive Water drinking

Our 12 week old Boerboel wants to drink water - she has had a urinary infection that we have been treating.. but this is crazy... she searches for mud puddles, rain, condensation... drinks until she is miserable and burping then lays around and pees... potty training is near impossible as she is more interested in water than life... ANY IDEAS? See More
