To be quite honest, I wouldn't even worry about it because you honestly cannot compare a Boerboel to a German Shepherd.
Because your Boerboel is first and foremost a MASTIFF, then he is naturally going to be slower at a lot of things. First they mature physically much slower than a GSD, therefore the fact that he rests a lot after activity is normal. My late GSD would rather chase a ball continuously and die of exhaustion than stop. My Boerboel (who I tend to think is much smarter) chases the ball a couple of times and once he is either hot, tired or bored stops and looks at me like "you get it." It wasn't until he was almost a year old that he had the endurance to accompany me on long walks. Now at 2 years he jogs a good 3 miles a day by my side with no issues. But he still has only 1/2 the energy as my GSD did.
As for why you have to socialize them so much.. Well you have a "guardian" breed there that has the potential to be naturally weary of strangers and very territorial. I will say that I socialized my guy from day one and as he has matured he is not readily excepting of strangers, does not like to be petted by them, and will not let anyone he does not know (without our permission) near or into the yard. Because your guy is mentally maturing slower than other breeds his "protective" instinct might not show up until after 8 months. Or perhaps he just might not have one. We have seen many Boerboels lately that have little to no "protective" instincts. The biggest indication that you can predict this behavior is by looking at his parents. Were they ever tested?
