Hi All,

Currently i have a 9 Month male and recently purchased a famle that is now 2 months old. They are from the same mother but different father. I do not intend mating the two them therefore they are separated. I am in the process of buying another female.

I just want to confrim should they breed would it be line or In breeding?

Hey Grant, That would be inbreeding. Be careful this is dangerous territory. The most likely the bad traits will be doubled up. Peace Lee

Thanks for the info Lee.

Regards

Lee is right..this is dangerous territory, but,to maintain the positive attributes of dogs we have bred them in a closely related.

grandfather x granddaughter

grandmother x grandson

father x daughter

mother x son

half brother x half sister

brother x sister ......not recommended...

many bad qualities than good..
It would do you well to read the following taken from "Purebred Dog Breeds into the Twenty-First Century:
Achieving Genetic Health for Our Dogs" written by Dr. Jeffrey Bragg. This is a link to the entire article

Inbreeding Depression

As genetic variability diminishes and homozygosity rises through inbreeding, a syndrome known as inbreeding depression sets in. It is characterised by a reduction in viability (survival of individual progeny), birth weight, fecundity (number of young) and fertility (reproductive success), among other things. Much of it is caused by the homozygous presence of rare, deleterious recessive alleles. Part of it may also be due to the relative absence of overdominant heterozygote combinations. As inbreeding depression becomes more severe, highly inbred lines tend to become extinct through the loss of ability to reproduce successfully and / or inability of the young to survive. It varies somewhat in intensity from species to species, due probably to variations in the number and nature of lethal, sublethal and subvital alleles involved. Some wild mammals which show almost no juvenile mortality when bred in captivity without inbreeding, exhibit 100 percent juvenile mortality when inbred! A survey of captive breeding records for 44 species [Ralls & Ballou, 1979, 1982] showed that juvenile mortality of inbred young was higher than that of noninbred young in 41 of the 44 species for which records were analysed.
inbreeding has been apart of dogs from the begining of time... this is a good way to get great dogs !!! look up german shepards and cross breeding on the net and you will find the most famous pair was cross bred... they were 100% brother and sister and were cross bre throught there intire life... The same has been done with Boerboels... What you have to learn is when it is okay and when it is not... you need to know if it is going to benifit you or not... A half brother and sister will generate a higher percentage of the offspring inheriting there paticular traits of the parents or grand parent than a normal breeding.... 100% bother sister inbreeding backs up the blood line... Make sure you never do (100%) more then 2 generations... after this the dogs will start to become stupied... I learned this by reading up on how the German Shepard was bred... those scientist had it down to a science... So in short I would lookup the pedigree of both dogs and see what and how they were bred... what took place... To much inbreeding is bad but using the same pair if the parents were not inbred, then this is okay... weather it is a plus or not can only be seen when the pups age... then you will know what turned out from the breeding... lol

Actually, breeding ahalf brother and sister is considered Linebreeding, not inbreeding. It is still risky, but it is def. Linebreeding. It is the same as using a nephew and an Aunt, etc...

This link explains the differences fairly well:

Hi all,

There is no such thing as line breeding! Line breeding is inbreeding and therefore exactly the same.

Line breeding is just made-up by animal breeders to achieve more similar looking animals. But what we really talking about here is inbred.

When 2 animals be matted to each other and they are related in any way we are talking about inbred it is simple as that!

Any good geneticist can tell you this.

Bobby said “inbreeding has been apart of dogs from the begining of time...”

That is correct but who make them do it?

But I think you should know that each form of inbred (in the long-term) will lead to:

  • Lower numbers of offspring
  • Shorter lifespan
  • More HD and ED
  • More other abnormalities
  • No genetic diversity

This is proven by genetics all over the world.

In Africa lives a pack of lions in an old not active volcano that is sealed off from other packs.

And guess what? They are dying out……….. because of “strange diseases” and lack of genetic diversity….

I know it is hard to find Boerboels that are not related at all because of the low numbers they started with.

But really any breed is better off with low as possible inbred. At least lower 6,25%. And never over 12,5%, that's the dangerzone.

At least we can try it for this wonderfull breed, I think they are worth it don't you think?

Sorry for my pore Enlish.

Keep well,

John

obsessive Water drinking

Our 12 week old Boerboel wants to drink water - she has had a urinary infection that we have been treating.. but this is crazy... she searches for mud puddles, rain, condensation... drinks until she is miserable and burping then lays around and pees... potty training is near impossible as she is more interested in water than life... ANY IDEAS? See More
