Glaucoma in Boerboels

I wanted to post this to bring more awareness to the issue of glaucoma in Boerboels. I hope breeders are testing for this debilitating disease because its becoming more and more common.
My Bear got an official diagnosis of 'primary inherited or breed related glaucoma' involving his left eye. What was particularly scary about this was that his was a rapid onset and within 12 hours he was blind in his left eye.

Interestingly enough the ophthalmologist was familiar with the breed. He commented that as the breed gets more popular here in the US, more and more cases of glaucoma in BBs are popping up. When I asked him how he knew, he told me that there is an online forum for ophthalmologists to troubleshoot and report diagnosis. He said Boerboels are starting to pop up more often than you'd like to see. Too bad more aren't testing for this debilitating disease.

Thanks Kim for posting this information.  Very sorry about your Bear, and I hope more will be aware of this issue.  I wanted to add a video about glaucoma here in hopes that others will better undestand it.

I'm new to this site- but I wanted to express my sorrow for what your Bear has gone through and my appreciation for being told about this terrible disease.  I watched the video that Marco put up and was horrified.  Something new to worry about. How did Sondra react to this terrible situation?

Thanks Marco and Jay. That's a good video for everything to see since this issue is becoming more prevalent in the Boerboel.  Jay, I've emailed Sandra. From what I understand, she's off line right now. What worries me is that Bear's mating was repeated 3 times, so there are 25+ dogs with his genes out there. Hopefully she will notify these owners to have their dogs screened.
