We would like to find a companion for our 3 year old female boerboel, after having to rehome our male boerboel because he became to dominant toward the man of the house. Can anyone give us some advice on this? We would prefer to have another female even if it is another breed. would it be easier to bring in a puppy or a dog of the same age? Suggestions please.

Its nice to have a companion for your dog, especially for those who are not able to spend as much time with their boerboels as they would like.  Though choosing another female can present another challenge for you with already having a 3 year old female in the house..  If you had problems with a dominant male, I would not recommend you having two females in the house together.  I'm not saying it can't be done, however it takes certain leadership from the owner to do so.  This same leadership is whats required in having a dominant male boerboel.  I mean no disrespect in saying that, but its something that you need to know.  You would be better off finding the right temperament male in my opinion.  In general, a male/female pair and even a male/male pair tends to get along more often than two females.  Please look over this article  ->HERE<-  it will help answer things better than I can. :)  I do wish you all the best in whatever decision you choose.

Hi Nicola.. have to say I totally agree with everything that Marco said. I have two beautiful Boerboels, Leeroy who is just over 2 now and Kat who is 6mths, we also have a female boxer Blaze who is coming up to being 4. The main thing that you need to take into account when choosing your next dog is your current situation. In my opinion.. if you are not a dominant enough personality to take on pack leader role, please do not add another Boerboel to your household. They require very strong leadership (male or female) or they will test everyone.. human or furry till they find their place.

I would recommend getting a submissive male pup who would allow your female her rightful place as pack leader.. it will make life alot more peaceful than trying to add another female of any age.

Best of luck with your decision.

also agree with what is being said here i have a female bowl and two male dogs a Min pin and a bull dog boxer mix the min pin is hec on wheels the bully mix is very laid back and balances the pack from both extremes and was really worked out well but man its still Alot of work it is however helping with my dog handling skills so i think i am working up to having two boerboels but personally i think i have Alot to learn before i get to that point they are not always a easy breed to handle if i were you if you want more then one dog start slowly get something very laid back and learn from them how to handle a pack it takes time i learn something new everyday

"Hello Kim welcome and thanks for posting.  Sorry to hear you having trouble with your puppy.  First off have you taken her to the vet?  Do they know of the situation?  Have they taken a urine sample?  If your girl has a UTI…"

obsessive Water drinking

Our 12 week old Boerboel wants to drink water - she has had a urinary infection that we have been treating.. but this is crazy... she searches for mud puddles, rain, condensation... drinks until she is miserable and burping then lays around and pees... potty training is near impossible as she is more interested in water than life... ANY IDEAS? See More
