Home Of The Rare Breed.
Hi all,
Has anyone had their boreboel do the Canine Good Citizen test? Did they pass? Does anyone keep with testing their boreboel every year? I know this may not be important to the breed at all, but I'm just curious if anyone does it.

Becky I would love to CGC Inferno and Promise but don't ever hear of them around anymore. My last ones were done maybe 4 years ago and yes one passed, one didn't as she wanted to race through the gate ahead of the handler LOL...I think it should be imperative that the Boerboel be tested and pass. We have a few temperament problems in the breed, so it would be nice to weed them out. I know its not all genetic, but it can play a part!
I recently discovered that the South African Boerboel is on Canada's 'watch list' so what does this tell you about breeders not breeding for good temperment first and foremost!!! I really think that Boerboel International's way of appraising is light years away from SABT and EBBASA and thank goodness they are all trying to work together now!! CGC or no CGC, your Boerboel should be friendly with everyone it meets, UNLESS threatened!!!!!
WHAT! :-( Oh man, where is this watch list? Are rottweilers on it? Anyway, This is just what i want. A endangered breed, I want to work with getting a intimidating breed a good rep. Gillian I wonder ... Inferno is a very impressive big boy, maybe he get get his therapy dog cert and love up community people. Being as impressive and large as he is I'm sure he would make the papers as a wonderful dog. He has a wonderful caring temperament as well so i doubt he would need too much training. I don't know if you have time for that sort of thing, was just a idea.
Either way, I really agree with you! Friendly Boerboels are best ... a dog intelligent enough to pick out good people from bad people is perfect. I don't think anyone with a Boerboel needs to worry about the dog not being protective. I do think everyone needs to worry about the dog being over-protective. In my opinion, aggression should be discouraged most of the time ... after all most of the time we are not threatened. I can tell you that all my life I have yet to encounter a very threatening situation. Breeders need to screen people like they do with rotts, they need to know why a person wants a Boreboel. Not all of its the breed, some of it is in proper training and raising of the dog. Perhaps Breeders need to educate people on the breed as well. Just my opinion. I was one of those who thought the Boerboel was a aggressive horrible dog. In fact everytime i heard Boerboel i heard bites, growls, dangerous, not approachable, guard dog only ... However, meeting a very good dog who happened to be a Boerboel with a wonderful temperament, I feel boerboel breeders should focus hard on making more dogs like that one. I shouldn't be hearing people telling me that dog I met was rare. Yes, I have been told more then once by dog lovers and professionals in the pet trade that that dogs temperament was rare. I think there is something wronge with this picture. I met another boreboel from the same kennel, she was also friendly with me. Boerboel owners need to be educated, send home with people hoping for a non aggressive life style for their dog and only Boerboels with good temperaments should be bred.
