I am new here and very interested in the breed. I have a lot of experience with dogs and breeding as I ran a very successful breeding program for years. I bred APBT and currently still have one of my foundation females. However she is getting up there in age and I am interested in a Boerboel. I am very thorough in my research and will not be purchasing for 2-3 years. I was wondering if I could get some insight into the highly recommended Boerboel Kennels. I will be purchasing a female as a pet however I am not looking for pet quality. I have a family with kids so temperament is first and foremost important to me. My wife and I are very active people and I need a dog who can keep up with us but be relaxed when at home. Structure, movement, and overall looks are all things I look for after temperament, and in that order. Also any info that you would like to share on the breed itself is welcome. Especially things that are viewed as a negative. Insight into pedigree and what dogs are highly recommended, the faults they carry and what they are known for producing. Thank you for you time and I look forward to gaining as much knowledge as I can and hopefully I can share some as well.

My first BB Bella was a train wreck, but my second Axel is a joy. He is almost 15 months old and although he hasn't reached maturity yet he has a great temperament and is healthy so far. He is from working lines and I got him from David Harris in Kansas. He can go forever on walks, loves the car and relaxes when he is at home. He gets along great with other dogs, cats and my pet ferret. He is friendly to other strange dogs and a joy to train. He has a medium drive I would say. My first BB would get winded walking around the block. His breeder breeds for temperament and health and looks are last. He was relatively inexpensive as BB's go being $1000 and I paid $350 to have him flown to MASS. Good luck in your search and make sure you do your homework. I wouldn't pay that much attention to appraisal scores as they don't give you the whole picture on the dog. There are a lot of BB's being bred with very poor temperaments and poor nerves which I ended up with the first time. Good luck!

Thanks Lisa. Does David Harris has a website I cod visit? If so please post it. Also can you tell me why you chose to get a dog from David?

No problem Kenny. I chose him because he came highly recommended. He is also one of the first breeders to breed BB's here in the USA. He is a farmer and only has a few litters a year. He makes his living as a farmer not a breeder. He breeds for temperament and health and admittedly doesn't give a rats ass about looks lol....He told me that. He breeds them to be under 150 lbs. for working ability, agility and healthy joints. He doesn't take deposits. When the litter gets to be around 3 months old (he keeps them longer) he will assess them and decide who is a good fit. I didn't have a hard time getting in touch with him but many people have complained about that. He works on the farm late hours. I will post his website. You can visit him or give him a call when you are ready. I met another member on here Dan Audet who has my Axel's litter mate Rascal. He is a dog trainer. His first BB had aggression issues also. He chose Harris for the same reasons as I did. We both had the good looking dogs with the aggressive natures the first time and it is tough having a dog like that that you have to tie up or put away when you have company. Here is David's link to the website.

"Hello Kim welcome and thanks for posting.  Sorry to hear you having trouble with your puppy.  First off have you taken her to the vet?  Do they know of the situation?  Have they taken a urine sample?  If your girl has a UTI…"

obsessive Water drinking

Our 12 week old Boerboel wants to drink water - she has had a urinary infection that we have been treating.. but this is crazy... she searches for mud puddles, rain, condensation... drinks until she is miserable and burping then lays around and pees... potty training is near impossible as she is more interested in water than life... ANY IDEAS? See More
