Home Of The Rare Breed.
Hey guys,
I am interested in your opinion on what age to bring your new Boerboel home. I have been told anywhere from 7 - 12 weeks. Any thoughts, reasonings, etc?
Thanks,
Regina

Hi Regina That range is good. But sooner the better after 7 wks. Solid nerve pups at 7 weeks are ready blend into your new world, also potty training is a bit easier, actually can be done in a week. if your timing, praise and meal/ water control is perfected. also they can get more accustom to your family/house noises get used to you carrying, rubbing them belly, body ear cleaning and toe nail clipping. Get them used to the routine fast is best. Are you getting a pup soon? If so congrats! Peace Lee
I have always felt at least 8 weeks if not a little longer. 10 to 12 weeks is a good time, but it all depends. Some breeders I have seen are in a rush to get rid of them, it cost money to feed them, so they will release them as soon as possible. Not only that but the pressure from buyers that are in a rush to get them. I know I am guilty of wanting them as soon as possible, being so excited but its important to wait in my opinion. The more time they spend with their mother, litter mates, and other dogs is normally better for them. It allows them to socialize, and is great for their psychological development.
*By LAW, most states require that puppies are at least 8 weeks old before being separated, and some states require them to be 9 weeks old. In most states, it's a misdemeanor to separate them and give them away or sell them any younger, punishable with jail term and/or a fine.
I have to agree with Marco. They learn from their litter mates and the mom during that critical stage. The breeder I got my new pup from keeps them back even longer. It is also easier to match them to their new homes as well when the are a bit older.
Good luck!
