Home Of The Rare Breed.
Hi,
So thrilled to find this site. My name is Ivy and I'm from Rockland County, NY. I'm here for 2 reasons. About 2 weeks ago I pulled an emaciated red fawn Boerboel pup from the Brooklyn ACC. She was due to be put down with kennel cough. Their vet's estimated her to be about 12-13 months, but my vet feels she's a bit younger since her canines and back molars hadn't completed come in. She was shy and fearful at first but within 48 hours this confident, loving and goofy pup emerged. She is blowing me away with her intelligence and is just so quick to learn. At this point the Boerboel temperament is coming out and she is becoming protective of her foster family in a reasonable way. I am working her twice daily with basic obedience and taking her out for socializing and she is doing great and I haven't picked up on any issues at all. I have her scheduled to be spayed on Monday and then she will be ready for her new home.
All of a sudden I started to wonder if this awesome pup may be someone's beloved Boerboel and I wanted to reach out to the Boerboel community. If you know of anyone missing a red fawn between the age of 9-13 months please let me know. I worked for the Humane Society for several years and I know that breeds such as this are often stolen and can wind up across the country in undesirable situations. I'm urging everyone to get their dogs micro-chipped and if you are a breeder microchip your pups before they leave and keep yourself listed as the contact if the dog is ever found.
If Merna is not reunited with her original owners I will be looking for a special home for her and I would appreciate your assistance in finding the right match for this awesome pup. I will post some pics here, but that is her on my profile pic.
Thanks so much for any assistance and guidance you can give me.

Hi - Ivy.
So glad that you took it on yourself to help that sweet girl. I love my BB's &, I would be devastated if I were to lose any of them. I've been away from the group for awhile ( sadly ) but, alot going on in my daily life. I realize that ur post has been here since Sept. 27....I was just going to give some helpful advice but, it's too late - I'm sure. Anyways , I was just going to let you know that Boerboels reach their maturity @ 2 yrs. of age. If they are spay/neutered before that age, it tends to stunt their growth , &, often tend to keep their puppy-ish behavior. Hopefully, she will be the exception to the rule. Hope she finds her a very devoted family. And, I hope to see more pics of her as, she grows. best of luck !
I just wanted to update everyone and thank those that reached out privately to assist me in helping to find Merna the perfect home. If all goes as planned she will be going to her new home this weekend. I found them on Craigslist (of all places!) After sifting thru almost 30 inquiries that I would never consider, I found a couple that almost seemed too good to be true. She's a vet tech and just lost her Cane Corso to bone cancer at almost 14 years of age. Her husband has a male Neo, so they know all about big mastiff breeds, they live on 20+ acres of mountainside property and want a protective, loving companion. Merna is like velcro to me, but after just a few minutes she was so intrigued with her potential new owner, who has an almost magical way with dogs, that she forgot I was even in the room. I am so excited for Merna, although there will be plenty of tears when she leaves. I had so much fun learning about this amazing breed and will definitely keep my eyes open for any that find themselves in trouble at our area ACCs and in need of rescue. We literally pulled Merna within an hour of being euthanized and I am so grateful that I spotted her information on Facebook and jumped in my car to save her.
I just saw your post and am checking to see if Merna's home did indeed work out?? I am hoping so!!!
